Lilo gives cabinet 100 days to perform or else

By Douglas Marau HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Dec. 13, 2011) – In the Solomons, Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has reportedly given 100 days ultimatum to his cabinet ministers to perform or face the axe, sources close to the Prime Minister revealed.

The source said Prime Minister Lilo warned his cabinet ministers to pull up their socks and get down to business.

The source said the 100 days started the day after his full cabinet was sworn in on November 22 last month.

Today marks the 21 days since the Lilo-Maelanga cabinet were sworn in.

"The Prime Minister is really serious about getting the job done and that is what he told his ministers; he doesn’t like to waste time," the source said.

The source claimed the Prime Minister was also eyeing some top candidates from the Opposition group to replace his ministers if they don’t live up to his expectation.

The source said some Opposition members have also indicated their support for Prime Minister Lilo in which they met with him recently.

"A lot of the Prime Ministers critics are quite surprised because he has proved them wrong since he took office last month," the source said.

The Solomon Star understands a lot of the current ministers are first time parliamentarians with only eight old faces out of the 23 ministers.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lilo is yet to name a replacement for the Communication and Aviation portfolio.

This was after former minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for East Are’Are, Andrew Hanaria has been declared ineligible to continue with his official duties as minister as well as an MP after losing a petition filed against him at the High Court last week on Wednesday.

The petition was filed against Mr Hanaria by three former losing candidates of the August 2010 National General elections namely; Aliki Toki’i Ha’apio, Abraham Namokari and Michael Ahikau.
