FLNKS representatives to discuss progress of Noumea Accord

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (Vanuatu Daily Post, Feb. 1, 2012) – The Director General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat, Mr. Peter Forau and staff will today receive a delegation of the Political Bureau of the Front de Liberation Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) who are on an official visit to the MSG Secretariat from February 1 to 5.

The Political Bureau of the FLNKS consists of Mr. Reignier Gerard, Secretary General of Union Caledonienne (UC), Mr. Poiroi Didier, Assistant Secretary General of Union Caledonienne (UC), Mr. Faua Yvon, Secretary General of Ressemblement Democratique Oceanien (RDO), Mr. Tokotuu Emile, Member of Ressemblement Democratique Oceanien (RDO), Mr. Washetyne Charles, Spokesperson of Parti de Liberation Kanak (PALIKA), Mr. Creugnet Jean, Assistant Secretary General of l’Union Progressiste en Melanesie (UPM), and Mr. Tutugoro Victor, President of l’Union Progressiste en Melanesie (UPM).

In welcoming the delegation from the Political Bureau of the FLNKS, the Director General of the MSG Secretariat thanked them for accepting the invitation and further extended a warm welcome to FLNKS Spokesperson Mr. Victor Tutugoro and the representatives of the different political grouping within the FLNKS.

Mr. Forau said this is the second visit by the Political Bureau of FLNKS to the MSG Secretariat since their last visit in 2010.

[PIR editors note: Forau also says the MSG is pushing for New Caledonia to "engage also with the MSG countries as part of deepening our cooperation with them... to strengthen their participation in economic activities as part of their preparation from independence."]

The MSG Director General said the Political Bureau of the FLNKS are here on invitation of the MSG Secretariat and will be holding discussions on a number of important issues of common interest.

"A key element for this visit is to discuss the progress of the implementation of the Noumea Accord and to follow up on some of the issues highlighted during the MSG Technical Mission to New Caledonia in November 2011 in preparations for the 2nd MSG ministerial mission to Kanaky-New Caledonia later this year," said Mr. Forau.

Forau said he hopes the visit will give the Secretariat the opportunity to improve its cooperation with FLNKS as a member of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

The MSG Director General said the delegation of the Political Bureau of the FLNKS will pay courtesy calls on the Government of Vanuatu as well as have the opportunity to visit other areas of interest in Port Vila.
