Root crops, vegetables ‘ruined’ in Western Division

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, Feb. 8, 2012) – A Red Cross regional coordinator is predicting food shortages in Fiji’s Western Division following floods last month that killed eight people and forced hundreds from their homes.

Mohammed Hafiz says half of the water supply and most road access have been restored in the region, which remains under a 15-day state of natural disaster.

He says most of the 1,300 people evacuated have returned to their homes but flood waters destroyed all the crops.

Mr. Hafiz says the interim prime minister is visiting the area today to ascertain what further help is needed.

"My personal view on this will be that in a very short time, soon, we will be running short of food, because all our root crops and vegetables and everything, they’re ruined."

Mohammed Hafiz says five villages have been quarantined because of typhoid.
