Former Police Ministry head replaces ousted Shanel

By Douglas Marau

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Feb. 29, 2012) – Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has appointed Police Minister Clay Forau as his new Foreign Affairs Minister.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Temotu Vatud was sworn in at the Government House yesterday afternoon.

This means the Police Ministry is now left vacant with Prime Minister Lilo yet to appoint his new minister.

Mr. Forau has replaced former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Shanel who was sacked by the Prime Minister earlier this month.

Mr. Forau was one of the top four contenders for the Foreign Affairs post besides government backbencher Steve Abana and Opposition members Seth Gukuna and Milner Tozaka.

The Solomon Star understands this is the first time Mr. Forau has been appointed to the post since he was voted into Parliament in 2006.

Mr. Forau had in the past served as Minister of Legal Affairs and as Health Minister.

At one stage he also served as the Leader of the Independent Group in 2010.

Meanwhile, two other ministers were sworn in yesterday and they are new minister for infrastructure Seth Gukuna and new minister for fisheries Alfred Ghiro.

Prime Minister Lilo is expected to reshuffle and appoint more ministers to fill in the vacant posts in the coming days.
