APIA, Samoa (Talamua, March 10, 2012) – The President of the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG), Ms. Lina Chang has been presented the U.S. Embassy's "Woman of Courage" Award.

The United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, David Huebner presented the award in commemoration of International Women's Day last Friday.

"The purpose of this award is to recognise Lina's tireless efforts in building SVSG into what it is today, a multinational, multi-platform agency of goodwill to aid and assist victims throughout Samoa and beyond," said Huebner.

"The award is inspired by the 6th Annual International Women of Courage Awards hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Ambassador Hubener also visited the teachers and students of the SVSG School that offers education of victims of various kinds of abuse.

"I am truly touched by the noble efforts of the SVSG team and the contributions they make to Samoan society. Their heart and humanity is evident in the work they do and the lives they affect," said Huebner.

SVSG started out as an initiative by former police women who wanted to assist abused women realize and recognize their rights. Years went by and the organisation gradually caught the eyes and ears of the public who rather direct their complaints to SVSG than the police.

The programme has prompted people to report longstanding cases of indecency, physical and sexual abuse and has opened doors to matters that people did not wish to report to Police.

Lina and her team has joined other organisations in spearheading awareness programme around the country on various issue of development for everyone.
