Australia-bound ship bust leads to three arrests

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, April 4, 2012) – New Caledonian police have seized 200 kilograms of cocaine bound for Australia from South America.

Police from Australia, New Caledonia and the United States started a joint operation in March after a tip-off.

Authorities followed a boat to waters north-west of New Caledonia, where they allegedly seized the cocaine and charged three people with a range of offences.

Kevin Zuccato, the Australian Federal Police's (AFP) national manager serious and organised crime, said the seizure was an outstanding result for the force.

"This demonstrates that geography is not an impediment to the AFP regarding our ability to disrupt the flow of narcotics into Australia," Assistant Commissioner Zuccato said.
