8 Solomons Candidates To Contest Regional By-Elections

6 from North Malaita, 2 from East Are’are constituencies

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, July 4, 2012) – A total of eight candidates have been nominated so far to contest the national by-election in the two constituencies of North Malaita and East Are’Are.

This was confirmed by the Electoral Commission yesterday while announcing the final day of nomination.

The commission said for North Malaita Constituency there are 6 candidates and for East Are’Are constituency there are 2 candidates so far.

Meanwhile, the commission said today is the last day for nominations for intending candidates for the national by-elections.

In a statement yesterday, nomination for the constituencies will close today at 4:30 pm.

The declaration of the National By-election by the Governor General on 20th June 2012 has opened up the nomination period which is 14 days.

Intending candidates have been given this period of time to submit a complete nomination and today being the fourteenth day, the nomination will close at 4:30pm.

The acting Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Alphonse Pero, has confirmed that as of 4:30pm yesterday, candidates contesting in the by-election numbered up to 8.

Mr. Pero urges those who wish to contest the by-election to lodge your nomination before 4:30pm today.

Any nomination lodged after 4:30 pm today is late and will not be accepted.

The Electoral Commission is informing all intending candidates who wish to withdraw their nomination to do so within 72 hours of the closing of nomination. Last day to withdraw your nomination is on Friday 6th July 2012 and it closes at 4:30 pm.

Mr. Pero continues to advice all voters from the two constituencies to listen out for updates in Solomon Islands Broadcasting Coporation radio programs, on Tuesdays 7:45 am and Thursday 6:15pm.

The by-election date is set for 1st of August 2012.
