Risk of fuel shortage in Tahiti averted

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, Oct. 14, 2012) – A fully laden fuel tanker has managed to dock in Papeete amid a strike by French Polynesian tug boat personnel.

The French high commission invoked its special powers to ensure the Stena Paris could enter the port, averting the risk of a fuel shortage in Tahiti.

A French Navy tug was made available and reports say the territory’s president, Oscar Temaru, was present for the berthing operation.

About 20 striking workers have threatened to take legal action over the methods used to try to break their strike.
