Several suffer minor injuries, PNG authorities investigating

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Dec. 27, 2012) – The Federal Government says several people suffered minor injuries during a fight in the Manus Island detention centre on Christmas Eve.

Five Sri Lankan and Iranian asylum seekers got into a fight in the internet room of the centre.

Several people suffered minor injuries, including a security guard.

A group of Iranian asylum seekers then held a protest for about a day.

The ABC has been told the dispute was related to the protest action.

Papua New Guinea police are investigating the incident but have not taken any action. The Government says the centre is now calm.

About 130 people are being held on Manus Island, including 30 children.
