Police to send investigation team to Weathercoast

By Jeremy Inifiri

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Jan. 11, 2013) – In the Solomon Islands, four people have been listed as prime suspects into the recent burning down of the Mbabanakira Police Post in the Weathercoast of Guadalcanal last weekend.

Deputy Police Commissioner Walter Kola revealed that according to initial investigations four men have been identified as prime suspects.

Mr. Kola said police are liaising closely with community and church leaders at the Mbabanakira area, some of whom have been very cooperative with the Police, providing the names of the four suspects.

He said that a team of investigators will be sent to the area next week to conduct further investigations into the matter.

Mr. Kola also clarified that the team will also be in consultations with the people and elders within the area to try and address long standing issues since the ethnic tensions.

This was after the people of Mbabanakira had warned the police that they are not welcomed in the area until they address long standing tension related issues with the people.

"The team will try and hold discussions with the leaders on the issues of reconciliation, investigations into the burning down of the Police post, kick start community policing programs there, and most importantly the recapture of two prison escapees believed to be in hiding in the area.

"The RSIPF will be on the mission supported by the Correctional Services personnel and assistance from Participating Police Force (PPF)," Mr. Kola said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kola urged anyone with additional information to contact police.
