Marshall Islands Proclaims Yearly Women’s Day

Contributions, achievements of women to be celebrated

MAJURO, Marshall Islands (Yokwe, March 7, 2013) – Republic of the Marshall Islands President Christopher J. Loeak yesterday signed a Proclamation that declares March 8 of every year as Women’s Day in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, in recognition of the many achievements and contributions made by Marshallese women to the country’s nation building and other aspects of the Republic’s continued growth.

During its meeting on Thursday, the Cabinet approved the declaration.

The Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands acknowledges that women holds highly respected traditional position of the Marshallese matrilineal society and custodial rights over the land inheritance and is undertaking programs to address the challenges and inequalities they continue to face.

In March of 2006, the Republic of the Marshall Islands ratified the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women.

This year, a committee was established to organize and coordinate all activities for Women’s Day to take place tomorrow, Saturday, March 9, 2013. The Office of the President is providing monetary support towards the event planned for tomorrow.
