MAJURO, Marshall Islands (Marianas Variety, April 8, 2013) – An early morning fire destroyed two major Majuro businesses Friday.

Believed to have started in the Lathbern Restaurant area, the fire quickly spread throughout the restaurant’s parent company, Skyline Enterprises.

The fire reportedly started about 5:30 a.m. Friday and by 6:30 a.m. had spread to neighboring company G&L Enterprises, one of the major clothing retail stores in Majuro. Dozens of local residents helped G&L employees carry clothing and other goods from the store to the safety of a church next door and across the street.

Both Majuro Fire Department and airport fire and rescue crews responded, but their trucks have limited water storage and poorly functioning hydrants hampered the firemen’s efforts. Water trucks from the city water company and several local businesses joined in the effort, but by 9am Skyline Enterprises was little more than a pile of rubble, and G&L Enterprises second story offices next to Skyline were burning down, as was its warehouse.

Both Skyline and G&L are family-operated businesses that have operated in Majuro for four decades.

No estimate was immediately available as to the extent of the damage to these two businesses, but it was clearly in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Two women reportedly jumped out of a window of the four-story apartment building next to Skyline Enterprises and were injured. They were taken to Majuro Hospital for treatment, but no further details were available.
