Gizo police detain men from Kohingo Island

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, June 24, 2013) – Six men are in Gizo police custody after they were accused of burning down machineries of a logging company on Kohingo island, west New Georgia, the previous Thursday.

The incident occurred as a result of a dispute between villagers in the area.

Gizo police say they responded to the incident and arrested six men who are now in police custody.

Police say Kindu villagers owned the log pond.

The logging was approved three years ago but the operation has just started.

Those held in custody are believed to have opposed to the operations, which is being done by Metro logging company at the invitation of landowners.

The accused are yet to face the court.
