Number Of Asylum Seekers On Nauru Tops 500

So far no refugee claims have been processed

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, July 1, 2013) – There are now more than 500 asylum seekers on Nauru after Australia transferred 29 men from Christmas Island at the weekend.

The group, comprised of 26 Sudanese and three Iranians, is the 21st transfer to Nauru since the detention centre was re-opened last September.

Officials at the Australian run camp are yet to complete any of the claims for refugee status made by the asylum seekers.
