12 children, others transferred by Australia to Christmas Island

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, July 4, 2013) -- The Australian government has removed the remaining child asylum seekers from Manus Island.

The 12 children are among 42 people who have been transferred to Christmas Island.

A fortnight ago, 70 people, including several family groups, were taken off the island.

A spokesman for the Immigration Department says children and families will still be liable to be transferred to the island under the Labor Party's no advantage principle.

However, the ABC understands the government will not send families to PNG again unless a permanent facility is built.

The Immigration Department's spokesman says the new Immigration Minister Tony Burke approved today's transfers as soon as he took up the role.
