SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, March 27, 2014) – The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) has decided to send a contingent to this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The decision was made during FASANOC's annual general assembly in Suva tonight.

Speaking to FijiLive after the assembly, FASANOC president Reg Sanday said most of the delegates agreed that Fiji should move on and participate in the Games.

"The delegates of the various sporting federations supported the call that we should go the Games and officials of Fiji Rugby Union and Netball Fiji also expressed their views in the meeting.

They are also fully supporting the move and want the country to move forward through sports." "It is just unfortunate that our 7s team and our netters will miss out due to the late announcement.

The Games committee does not see it fit to conduct a re-draw for these two sports.

7s was our biggest hope but now we will have to do away without them." Sanday confrmed athletes from 9 sporting federations will be chosen to represent the country at the Games and Team Fiji will only send elite athletes.

"We will only select the best and high achieving athletes to the Games.

Fiji will be represented in nine different sports out of the 17 that will be played at the Games and only the best will be given the chance to fly the country's flag in Glasgow." FASANOC will release details of the selected sporting federations in a press conference tomorrow morning.

Fiji was given the green-light to participate in the Games by the Commonwealth Secretariat during its meeting in London 11 days ago.

The Glasgow games will run from 23 July to 3 August.
