One application still in process when writ was issued declined

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, August 7, 2014) – There will only be seven political parties contesting Fiji's 2014 Elections, Registrar of Political Parties Mohammed Saneem confirms.

Confirming the news to FijiLive, Saneem said with the writ of election being issued the only parties endorsed to contest the forthcoming election are the FijiFirst party, Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), National Federation Party (NFP), Fiji Labour Party (FLP), People's Democratic Party (PDP), Fiji United Freedom Party and One Fiji Party.

He confirmed one other application had been declined because it was still in the process stage when the writ was issued Monday by the Acting Fijian President and Chief Justice Anthony Gates.

"There is one application that was in process.

And it will not be dealt with for this election," Saneem said.

The only other applicant that was known to have applied for registration was the proposed Activist party led by Sairusi Waininima.

The proposed party had applied on July 17.

Meanwhile registration of voters also ceased on Monday.

According to latest figures released by the Fijians Elections, 580,000 plus voters had registered by 6pm Monday for the September 17 election.
