Police receive special training on dealing with VIPs

By Lagi Keresoma

APIA, Samoa (Talamua, August 6, 2014) – Acting Police Commissioner Fauono Tala Tapu is confident with the security for the leaders of countries attending the Small Islands Development States conference next month.

Fauono’s confidence is based on the skills and knowledge attained by a special group of police officers trained to look after the VIPs of the conference.

"The training is not easy but learning the skills will help them perform effectively and efficiently when needed," said Fauono.

The training focused on communication, protection, scanning, defense, emergencies and dealing diplomatically with people.

The group learnt to communicate clearly and quickly. They are sworn police officers who will be responsible for the safety and security of the people they pledged to protect. And will deal with issues that arise diplomatically.

The group underwent a four days training conducted by specialists from the Australian Federal Police squadron and were trained on security measures such as scanning certain things including anything suspicious.

Fauono acknowledged the support from the Australian Government in providing such skills. He said these skills could also be used in future high level meetings in the country.

"They need to follow what they learnt and implement them in their line of work" said Fauono.

He said the success of the programme and the SIDS conference is in your (police) hands.

Australian High Commissioner to Samoa Her Excellency Sue Langford acknowledged the trainees achievement.

She said this training programme was designed specifically for Samoan police and Australia will always stand by to help Samoa.

She is confident that with this international standard of training, Samoa is ready for any high level international conferences.

After closing the training yesterday, they practiced their skills in escorting and driving the AHC and Fauono to and from their offices.

Police officers who had previous training on these skills are undergoing a three days refresher course starting today.
