French President to decide on Flosse’s pardon request

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, August 12, 2014) – French Polynesia's daily newspaper says the president Gaston Flosse will know in early September whether Francois Hollande will pardon him so that he can stay in office.

Last month, France's highest court upheld a conviction for massive abuse of public funds which entailed for him a suspended four-year jail sentence, a 170,000 US dollar fine and the loss of all public offices for three years.

However, the French government decided not to serve the official notification of the sentence and let him continue in office while at the same accepting Flosse's bid for a presidential pardon.

Flosse has maintained he has done no wrong.

La Depeche de Tahiti says a decision is expected in early September.

Flosse is also a French Senator but the paper reported last week that he was the only Senate member who never put in a day's work in the past year while still on full pay.
