Athletes were accommodated in unhealthy conditions: Toribiong

KOROR, Palau (Island Times, Sept. 3, 2014) – Palau Senator Joe Toribiong has written Senate President Camsek Chin expressing his concern regarding the hosting of the 8t Micronesian Games. The 8th Micronesian Games was held in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) from July 17-28, 2014.

In his letter to Chin dated August 20, 2014, Toribiong, while thanking Pohnpei for hosting the event, said that his utmost concern was the living conditions and the health of Palau’s athletes.

He noted that in numerous cases, athletes got sick with diarrhea due to the living conditions and meal preparations.

"I recommend that the hosting country’s health department must dispatch its health officials to certify and monitor the living conditions including the food preparation of every Micronesian Games," Toribiong said in the letter.

"Therefore, I ask you Mr. President and the Senate Presiding Officers to look into this matter by addressing it with the Palau National Olympic Committee. This is in the best interest of Team Palau as their health is at stake, which can significantly affect their performance. I also note that teams Saipan and Guam did not live in the 8th Micronesian Games Village offered by Pohnpei, instead they rented hotels. Therefore, the government of Palau should seek ways to ensure that accommodations and food are secure for Palauan athletes and if funding is necessary the Olbiil Era Kelulau should take action in the upcoming Micronesian Games," he added.
