Dame Meg Taylor to take up Secretary General position in Suva

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Oct. 13, 2014) – Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has thanked Fiji for welcoming the appointment of Dame Meg Taylor as Secretary-General of the Pacific Island Forum and for hosting her in Suva during the duration of her term.

O’Neill told the 44th Fiji Day celebrations in Port Moresby on Friday that PNG was looking forward to welcoming Fiji back to the Forum of which it was a founding member.

"We look forward to them joining the Pacific community, the Pacific family in the Pacific Islands Forum," he said.

"Fiji is a founding member of the Forum, and Fiji is a valuable and strong partner in many of the regional issues that we will continue to encounter as we move forward.

"Fiji’s re-entry into the Pacific Islands Forum is one that we welcome and we look forward to working closely together with Fiji.

"We express our gratitude to Fiji for them warmly extending their appreciation of the Forum’s new Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor, who will take up her appointment very soon.

"Thank you for accepting her to come and live and work in Fiji, because her elevation to that position was truly a reflection of the Pacific countries and Pacific community.

"She had overwhelming support during the election to that position.

"We will continue to work closely with Fiji in terms of increasing our trade and investment in the Pacific region."

Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare was at the celebrations last Friday and was the chief guest at the Fiji Day independence fun day on Saturday.
