WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, Nov. 27, 2014) – The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture plans to visit Nauru next year.

The group's role is to prevent and eliminate torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment of detainees.

It also works with national governments that have ratified the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture.

The body's chairperson Malcolm Evans says the group will also visit Guatemala, Italy, and the Philippines in 2015.
