SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Jan. 16, 2015) – Following a series of raids on Vanua Levu that led to the uprooting of thousands of marijuana plants, particularly in Cakaudrove, Fiji Police's Operation Sasamaki has moved south yet again conducting successful raids.

The second phase of the operation, now being conducted on Kadavu, has already resulted in police teams raiding two farms on Wednesday and uprooted 754 plants believed to be marijuana.

Police Chief Operations Officer ACP Rusiate Tudravu said the first raid was conducted at Nauciwai Village, Yale, where they uprooted 325 plants believed to be marijuana.

He said six people were taken to the Vunisea Police Station for questioning.

In the second raid, ACP Tudravu said their team uprooted 429 plants also believed to be marijuana from a farm belonging to a 32-year-old man of Levuka Village, also in Yale.

He said the suspect was yet to be arrested.

He added a 34-year-old woman was also arrested on Wednesday after she was found with a plastic containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana.

"The outcome of day one of Operation Sasamaki in Kadavu will see four people being escorted to Suva with seized plants and leaves believed to be marijuana," ACP Tudravu said.

"Testing of the materials will be conducted at the Fiji Police forensic lab in Nasova.

"Phase two of Operation Sasamaki is also an outcome of a request that was made by the Kadavu Provincial Council last year to conduct a clean-up campaign on the island."

ACP Tudravu said the Fiji Police Force was grateful to the vanua of Kadavu for its support of their operation as information had been forthcoming.

He said the information assisted their men on the ground and their intentions to eradicate the cultivation and trade of marijuana.

Operation Sasamaki's raids in Cakaudrove early this month resulted in the uprooting about 4000 marijuana plants.
