RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (Cook Islands News, Jan. 28, 2015) – Symbolising the founding of the Cook Islands and its subsequent growth, the 50th anniversary logo (pictured) has finally been launched.

CINews layout artist Katarina Katoa said her winning design was slightly altered by the judges but she was excited to see the final product.

The logo symbolises the ‘pito’, the umbilical cord. This signifies birth and relates to the founding of this nation from its infancy and its growth, Katoa says.

"It also represents the connection of our people to our God, land, the sea and to each other."

Katoa has a Bachelor of Creative Arts from the Manukau Institute of Technology in Auckland, and won a New Zealand Aid Programme scholarship which helped her to complete her studies. The design won Katoa a large touchscreen computer monitor, donated by Computer Man.
