New project replaces diesel generators, brings 24-hour electricity

RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (Cook Islands News, Feb. 23, 2015) – It was a highly exciting day for Palmerston Island on Saturday, February 21, at 6.48pm when the island’s new solar energy power system was switched on.

The island now has 24-hour power, generated entirely by the sun.

Island Administration executive officer Arthur Neale says the island has been abuzz with much anticipation, with all residents looking forward to the changeover from diesel generated power to the solar energy system after nearly three months of work by several contractor teams.

This week the system will be monitored and tested before the contractors leave for Rarotonga on February 28.
