Meeting to discuss how to improve welfare of local people

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, May 6, 2015) – Tribal leaders from seven regions in Indonesia's Papua are set to hold a grand assembly in Jayapura from this weekend.

The chairman of the assembly committee, Agustinus Donel Ohee, told the Antara news agency the meeting will focus on how the leaders can improve the welfare of local people.

He says other topics for discussion include customary land rights, the implementation of the special autonomy law on Papua and the make-up of the Papuan Legislative Council.

He says although the autonomy law has been implemented for the last 10 years, tribal leaders are yet to take their place on the Council.
