The 19th Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia on Monday elected Pohnpei’s Sen. Peter M. Christian as the new FSM president and Kosrae’s Sen. Yosiwo P. George as the new vice president of the nation.

Christian and George succeed Emanuel Mori of Chuuk and Alik Alik of Kosrae, both of whom were elected in 2007 and served two terms.

The new Congress also organized the national legislative leadership by electing Chuuk Sen. Wesley W. Simina as the new speaker and Pohnpei Sen. Berney Martin as the new vice speaker. Chuuk Sen. Florencio Singkoro Harper will remain floor leader.

The chairpersons of the seven congressional standing committees were also named on Monday morning and they are:

Supreme Court Associate Justice Beauleen Carl-Worswick administered the oath of office to the new president and vice president, and all the members of the 19th FSM Congress, including two freshmen senators, Robson Romolou and Ferny Perman.

The opening day of the first regular session was witnessed by a packed congressional chamber with the notable presence of traditional leaders, state and national leaders, the diplomatic corps and family and friends of the newly elected national leaders.
