SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, June 3, 2015) – U.S. Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary for Insular Affairs Esther Kia’aina has vowed to help the CNMI complete its climate change adaptation plan in 2016.

Kia’aina, in an interview on Monday, said she is committed to advance climate change adaptation in the Northern Marianas and other Pacific islands.

She said she will discuss this issue with CNMI and other island leaders during the climate change forum on June 4 and 5 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Guam.

Kia’aina at the same time commended the CNMI’s environmental agencies for doing a good job in trying to combat climate change issues.

"Coastal management team has been very active in their efforts to fight climate change and I want to help them by helping to establish an overall climate adaptation plan, which will include the many sectors of society, so it’s very important that we’re having this conference [on Guam]," she added.

"It’s not a competition but we will do a climate change status report. This is about a frank dialogue to see how we could ramp up our efforts."

Kia’aina said around 90 leaders from the Pacific region, including the CNMI, are expected to attend the forum.
