Represent women in small businesses as new APEC priority

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, July 13, 2015) – Papua New Guinea has been tasked to select an iconic woman for one of the series of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meetings in Manila in September.

The iconic woman must be a business model, one that has a leading SME (small to medium enterprise) and or micro-enterprises and has outstanding performance growth potential. The iconic woman should have a business and operations must be inclusive which engages even the smallest sector of society.

The iconic woman concept is a major objective to promote women in small and medium-sized enterprises and micro-enterprises sector.

Religion, Youth and Community Development Secretary Anna Solomon launched the concept for PNG last Friday in Port Moresby and announced for women to apply to be considered PNG Iconic woman at the Philippines meet. Ms Solomon said the women must possess strong moral fibre and extraordinary vigour, integrity and selflessness. "She must be visionary and contributes to the community through her business," Ms Solomon said.

Despite a late deadline for applications, Ms Solomon is optimistic that women will use their networks to nominate their icon through an extension of the deadline to the end of this month.
