HAGÅTÑA, Guam (Pacific Daily News, July 23, 2015) – Guam’s only direct air link to Cairns, Australia, will cease to exist in September.

United Airlines confirmed Thursday its twice weekly Guam-Cairns service would end Sept. 26. United also plans to stop its daily flights between Guam and Seoul, South Korea, on Sept. 30.

"We have made this decision because the services’ financial performance did not meet our expectations," the airline stated.

"We will contact customers with bookings for flights beyond those dates to either offer them alternate travel plans or provide refunds. We apologize for any inconvenience caused."

Several airlines serve the Guam-Korea route. Air Busan started flying from South Korea to Guam Monday. The route also is served by Korean Air, Jeju Air and Jin Air. Another airline, T’way, has announced plans to serve the Guam-Korea route as well.

South Korean visitor arrivals now make up almost 30 percent of all tourist arrivals on Guam. Japan remains the largest market at more than 50 percent of arrivals, but that’s a decline from 70 to 80 percent of all of Guam’s tourist arrivals several years ago.
