Kola replaces Onagi, ousted after lengthy student boycott

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Sept. 25, 2015) – Doctor John Kola is the new acting vice-chancellor of the University of Goroka and the 2015 academic year of the university will be completed.

Mr Joseph Sukwianomb, the interim university chancellor, announced this yesterday in the presence of the entire council members a day after the university council was sworn in.

Dr Kola takes over from Dr Gairo Onagi who was suspended earlier in the month by Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Minister Malakai Tabar.

Mr Sukwianomb said the council has confidence in the appointment of Dr Kola to deliver in his capacity at the UOG to retain stability and normalcy to all concerned stakeholders.

Dr Kola, who is associate professor of chemistry at the University of PNG, is believed to be able to bring confidence, provide administration that promotes an environment of trusteeship and good governance.

The appointment is pending investigations outcome as directed by Minister Tabar to be presented to the interim council to implement.

Dr Kola said the priority is to complete the academic year, likely to be extended on advice from the academic board.

Also suspended as of yesterday is the two pro vice-chancellors James Yoko and Michael Mel and replacing is Dr Samuel Kopamu.

The appointment comes after two months of the UOG boycotting of classes by the students and finally the appointment of the interim council earlier this week.
