Palau Prepares To Host 5 Major Events In Next Few Months

Ministries, agencies gear up for busy 2016

KOROR, Palau (Island Times, Jan. 19, 2016) – Palau will host at least five major regional and international events between now and April of this year, according to the recent directive issued by President Remengesau.

Presidential Directive No. 16-16, which was signed by the President on January 15, 2016, noted that Palau is honored and confident in its propriety and capacity to serve as host to these important events.

These events include the 1)16th Micronesian President’s Summit, which is scheduled to take place on February22, 2016; 2) The 21st Micronesian Chief Executives’ Summit set to be held from Feb. 23 to 25, 2016; 3) Pacific Island News Association (PINA) Media Summit from March 20 to 25, 2016; 4) The Smaller Island States (SIS) Leaders Retreat in March 2016; and Joint Committee Meeting (JCM) in April 2016.

The Presidents of Palau’s neighboring countries of Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are expected to attend the 6th Micro Presidents Summit and 21st MCES. Representatives from different media organizations and entities in the pacific Region are expected to grace the PINA Media Summit. The SIS Leaders Retreat is expected to bring to Palau the heads of state and other leaders of the SIS members states, which include Cook Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, and Tuvalu.

High-ranking US Government and Military officials are coming for the JCM, which is a gathering of US and Palau government and military leaders. Security and defense issues are to be discussed during the gathering.

In preparation for these events, a Presidential Directive outlining responsibilities and tasks of various government agencies was issued. According to the Directive, logistical coordination across Ministries and between the National Government and all relevant entities and persons is needed in order to make all necessary and appropriate preparations.

All the government ministries, Representatives from Governors Association and Organization of State Speakers are part of the Organizing Committee responsible for the preparation for all the events.
