On March 5, 2016 Li Jinmei, wife of the Chinese ambassador to FSM, held a reception for International Women’s Day in the Chinese Embassy here.

Maria Donre, vice president of the Pohnpei Women Council, was present, along with over 40 guests including Liwiana Ramon Ioanis, chief clerk of the FSM Congress, Linda Peterson, wife of the governor of Pohnpei State, Miluky Perman, wife of Sen. Ferny S. Perman, Nobuko Sakai, wife of the Japanese ambassador to FSM, Ignacia Robert, wife of the FSM secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Miphel Susaia, wife of the former FSM ambassador to China, and other senior female officials from the FSM government, the FSM Congress and Pohnpei State, including spouses of the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to FSM, local celebrities, as well as female representatives of overseas Chinese in FSM and experts from the Chinese Medical Team who work at the Pohnpei State Hospital.

Li extended her warmest welcome to all the distinguished guests present. She briefed them on the efforts and advances made by the Chinese government in achieving gender equality and protection of women’s rights.

She pointed out that Chinese women are playing an increasingly important role in politics, the economy, culture and society, and that "women hold up half of the sky."

She also spoke highly of the great efforts made by FSM in protecting the interests of women and children, as well as promoting the comprehensive development of women’s cause.

She expressed her belief that if Chinese women and their FSM sisters can join hands, they can surely hold up half of the sky, for the promotion of deeply-rooted friendship between the two countries.

Maria Donre and Linda Peterson expressed their appreciation to Li and the embassy for holding the reception to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Maria Donre also outlined the FSM’s significant progress in protecting the right of women.

She invited all ladies to take part in the upcoming celebration which will be organized by the Pohnpei Women Council on March 8.

Beno Hedson, section director of the Pohnpei State Hospital expressed her appreciation to the Chinese Medical Team for making great contributions to Pohnpei State.

Dr. Chang Ximei from the Chinese Medical Team was invited to give a presentation focusing on women’s health care.

Chang said the best thing for women’s health care is to promote a healthy life style.

The already occurring risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia should be carefully controlled, and prevention must be put into practice well in advance, Chang said.

Women are the promoters and pillars of a healthy family and a good management of health for women might involve three generations in a family, Chang added.

This is also a starting point for initiating the building of a healthy family, which can be reached through the initiatives of women, Chang said,

At the reception, the dance team from the Chinese Embassy led by Li Jinmei presented a wonderful performance.

The Qipao show performed by female Chinese diplomats revealed the beauty and elegance of Chinese women and they received big rounds of applause from the guests.

After the performance, the guests gathered together and enjoyed making dumplings and sharing cultures.

The guests had pleasant chats with each other at the reception. They praised the event as a great success and hoped that there will be more opportunities for exchanges like this in the future. They said that the Chinese and FSM women can surely work close together, making more contribution to deepen the friendship between the two countries.
