PNG Minister Assures Bougainville Of Ongoing Commitment

National government to address social, political, economic issues

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, May 18, 2016) – Minister for Bougainville Affairs Joe Lera has assured the Autonomous Bougainville Government that his ministry is committed to addressing Bougainville’s social, political and economic issues.

Lera gave the assurance to ABG President Dr John Momis during a meeting.

He wants to work with the Government and ABG to help Bougainville’s preparation to referendum.

Lera said improving a good relationship between the leaders of both governments was crucial for Bougainville to prosper.

Lera plans to focus on:

  • Improving relations between the Government and ABG leaders and the people;
  • restructuring the National Coordinating Office of Bougainville Affairs;
  • educating Government leaders on Bougainville’s political situation;
  • improving the joint supervisory body and referendum forums; and,

And creating proper communication channel between the two governments.

Lera said as part of educating Government leaders on Bougainville’s political situation, he would table a report during the next parliament session.

He said his ministry would also re-organise the office of NCOBA to make it more responsive to Auptonomous Bougainville Government’s programs.

Lera said a restructure review has been completed and is waiting to be finalised before being processed and implemented.
