PNG MP Leaks Health Reports Calling For Improved Health Management

Frustrated by delays, ongoing TB concerns, prompt Kimisopa to violate protocols

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, June 22, 2016) – Goroka MP Bire Kimisopa has broken protocol to release two comprehensive reports on public health management prior to their tabling in Parliament.

Mr Kimisopa, who chairs the special parliamentary committee on public sector reform and service delivery, used "the national TB health emergency" as the reason for his unprecedented move yesterday.

"We simply cannot wait forever to take strong and decisive action on health management. The people of PNG need to know the facts and real change needs to occur in the health sector. The health system is in disarray and incapable of meeting public expectations. We need Government to admit the failures in health management, and act decisively to fix the problems before they are completely out of hand," he said in a statement to the news media.

Electronic copies of the reports are available on the committee website and hard copies were available for the media who attended a news conference yesterday in Port Moresby.

Mr Kimisopa had expressed disappointment at Parliament’s failure to entertain three comprehensive reports - on the late delivery of teacher leave fares in 2013; an interim report on health sector management; and a final report of health sector management.

"These reports have been listed on the Parliament Notice Paper several times but each time either Parliament goes into recess or the reports are removed from the paper.

"Most recently I called a news conference to advise that the reports would be tabled in the March sitting of Parliament. Once again the reports could not be tabled and further attempts in June sitting also failed," Mr Kimisopa said.

He said the special committee which he chairs has wide representation and has spent a great deal of time and effort, not to mention public monies, in compiling comprehensive and thoughtful reports.
