SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, June 28, 2016) – A military aircraft developed for the US Navy is expected to be sent over to Fiji to support the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) operation Tui Moana later this month.

The Boeing P-8 Poseidon is the US navy's next generation long-range maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, anti-shipping, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.

Tui Moana is one of a series of multinational events monitoring the health and use of tuna fisheries in the Southwest Pacific.

According to the US embassy, this detachment will include flights and Senior Leadership Engagements (SLEs) with Fiji civilian and military personnel in Nadi and Suva to improve interoperability and familiarisation.

"The US Navy shares a mutual interest with other maritime nations in freedom of navigation, respect for international law, and unimpeded and lawful commerce," the embassy stated.

"These types of exercises allow for multilateral training while exchanging both skills and cultures.

"The US shares many traditions and looks forward to opportunities to foster the ongoing professional partnership with Fiji and the other FFA participants."
