Tonga Introduces Fatty Food Tax, Increases Cost Of Tobacco

Levy part of campaign to cut non-communicable diseases

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, July 6, 2016) – Tonga has instituted new taxes on foods as part of its campaign to cut non-communicable diseases.

An increased excise tax of 40 seniti, about US$0.15, a kilogram went on various foods, including chicken, mutton and turkey tails, on Tuesday.

The new law focusses on fatty meats and other food items that contribute to NCDs.

The price of tobacco is also up by nearly a third.

The Minister of Inland Revenue and Customs, Tevita Lavemaau, told Radio Tonga the government was working to increase the number of fish available on the local market.
