Palau Vice Presidential Candidate Campaigns With Palauan Community In CNMI

Koror Governor Adachi says he has right experience to do the job

By Junhan B. Todiño

SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, July 13, 2016) – Koror Gov. Yositaka “Yosi” Adachi told the Palau community on Saipan that he would be a good vice president of the island nation because of his extensive experience in the executive branch and in the private sector.

“I have various experiences in the executive function, and I feel that what I’ve done in the State of Koror I can duplicate in the national government,” he said, adding that Koror represents the majority of the population in Palau.

In an interview, Adachi said he wanted the Palauan community on Saipan to know his platform of government.

“I’m giving them the opportunity to interview me because I am seeking employment and the people are my employers,” he told Variety.

His meeting with the Palauans on Saipan was held at the Filcom Pavilion in Susupe from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.

Adachi has been governor of Koror since 2006. He served as administrator of the Civil Service Pension Plan from 1996 to 2005, and was its claims officer and deputy administrator from 1990 to 1996.

From 1986 to 1990, Adachi worked for the National Treasury and from 1984 to 1986, he was with the Bank of Guam and the Bank of Hawaii.

His work experience in the government includes being speaker of the 7th Koror State Legislature from 2002 to 2005. He was a Koror state legislator from 1993 to 2005, and he represented Oikull hamlet in the Airai State Constitution Convention in 1992.

Adachi became a member of the Civil Service Pension Plan Trust Board in 2010 and he served as chairman of the Koror Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association in 2000.

“I think my experiences speak for themselves,” he added.

Adachi is running against two other vice presidential candidates: Palau Sens. Raynold “Arnold” Oilouch and Mlib Tmetuchl.

“I could have decided to run for the [Palau] Congress, but there’s so much politics in there and people are being left behind,” Adachi said.

He believes he can work with whoever will be elected president. “I am a working person, and that’s what a leader needs to do. With all the experience I have, I think I can assist the president in any cabinet ministry he assigns me. I am ready if I’m fortunate enough to be given the opportunity.”
