As appointment neared completion, search fell apart

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (Vanuatu Daily Post, July 16, 2016) – Minister for Internal Affairs,Alfred Maoh has confirmed to local media this week that the position of the Vanuatu Police Force Commissioner will have to be re-advertised.

The announcement by the Minister means the Vanuatu Police Force will still go through a few more months with an Acting Commissioner.

Appointing a new Police Commissioner is included in the current government’s 100 days plan but the long delay could be attributed to the recent replacement of the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.

The position of a new Police Commissioner was first advertised earlier this year and 8 applications were received.

The Commission then shortlisted 3 applicants who were interviewed and the process of appointing a new Commissioner was nearing completion when the Chairman of the Police Service Commission was removed.

Minister Maoh told local media that the process taken to appointment a new Police Commissioner was against the law hence it will require a new start-over.

He said all who have applied will have to reapply in order to start a new process.
