PNG Central Province Farmers Laud Trade and Industry Minister's Sustainable Development Plan

Landowners' association: 'Bottom up approach that the Koiari people will benefit from at the local level'

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, August 10, 2016) – The Koiari people of Central Province have commended the Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Richard Maru for introducing a Sustainable Development Plan to utilise land in farm activities.

Iditu Vatabia landowners’ association chairman Iani Vaeako said the new plan was introduced during a recent visit by Minister Maru to Koiari LLG, which has directed the focus of people to vacate land for farm use.

"This plan will help us go into farming cash crops, poultry, piggery and other projects that we can run in our villages to sustain our livelihood," Mr Vaeako said.

He described Minister Maru’s visit to the Koiari LLG as a bottom up approach that the Koiari people will benefit from at the local level.

As the owners of the Sirinumu dam which supplies water and power to the city of Port Moresby, they have not been seeing government services delivered ever since, he added.

"There was no education, health, road infrastructure development, water and power supplied into our villages since independence."

"This new plan that Minister Maru has prepare to introduce to us will benefit everyone in every village," Mr Vaeako said.
