Recount In PNG's Kandep Open Election Shows Incumbent Opposition Leaders Ahead

Polye looks set to retain seat; final results later this week

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Oct. 4, 2016) – Kandep Open recount continued yesterday with 44 out of 72 ballot boxes counted by yesterday at Wabag Primary School in Enga Province. After the recount box number 44, a total of 31,474 allowable ballot papers were noted, of which 206 were found informal while 31,476 were accepted ballot papers.

Incumbent Don Polye leads with 15,263 votes followed by Alfred Manase with 6758 votes.

The recount started with 10 ballot boxes last Saturday afternoon after opening the shipping container containing the Kandep electorate ballot boxes.

This was witnessed by the 2012 National Election Kandep electorate returning officer Naipar Kea, Kandep open recount returning officer Alwynn Jimmy, Electoral Commission deputy operation commissioner Simon Sinai, commission lawyer Ray William, lawyer for Don Polye Daniel Piaen and the lawyer for Alfred Manase Joshua Ku-usa, Enga provincial police commander Chief Superintendant George Kakas and scrutineers for the candidates.

The recount is expected to be completed this week.
