Fiji Conducts National Disaster Awareness Week

Government encouraged to review disaster preparedness plans

By Litia Cava

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Oct. 26, 2016) – There is a need for Government and other statutory bodies to review their plans for disaster preparedness, says Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Joeli Cawaki.

Speaking at the launch of the National Disaster Awareness Week in Suva yesterday, Mr Cawaki said as the cyclone season approached, people must take time to discuss with their households and communities whether they are ready for natural disasters.

"Are there plans in place for people who are less able to care for themselves such as persons with disabilities, the elderly and children? If not, discuss with them on how they can be helped and what they need to be better prepared," Mr Cawaki said.

"Now is the time for Government, DISMAC authorities, statutory bodies and civil society organisations to review their plans for disaster preparedness."

Mr Cawaki said in the next few months, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) would roll out educational material and practical drills throughout Fiji on tsunamis and tsunami response.
