New Fellowships for 2017: Pacific Islands Leadership Program with Taiwan

The East-West Center is pleased to invite applications for the Pacific Islands Leadership Program with Taiwan (PILP) for 2017. Now in its fifth year, the objective of the PILP Fellowship is to empower young leaders from across the Pacific region to exercise leadership and promote cooperation in a variety of cultural, geographical and institutional environments.

Program Description

The PILP seeks outstanding individuals from all walks of life (government, business, NGOs, health, media, education, etc.) to participate in an innovative leadership development program at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

From August to November 2017, up to twenty-five fellows will spend two months in experiential learning exercises at the East- West Center, in addition to a one month field study in Taipei at the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs (IDIA). Curriculum includes future scenario planning,  social  entrepreneurship  and  risk  analysis,  climate change and environmental stewardship, international relations, and public health.

Citizens from the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu are eligible to apply for these competitive and merit-based fellowship awards.

In PILP, Fellows will:

  • Explore leadership techniques and tools
  • Analyze personal leadership strengths and weaknesses
  • Grasp and be able to communicate implications of regional and global trends
  • Connect with a diverse range of global specialists and research
  • Forge deeper intercultural communication skills and join a lifelong learning community at the East-West Center
  • Develop enhanced abilities to navigate regional and personal change

Program Dates 

The residential portion of the 2017 PILP Fellowship is tentatively scheduled to take place from August to mid-November 2017.  Exact dates will be announced shortly.

PILP Fellowship Provisions 

Tuition, residence hall room costs, health insurance, course materials, living stipend, round-trip airfare to Honolulu, roundtrip airfare from Honolulu to Taipei, as well as visa SEVIS fees (if required).
