Bougainville Women Raising Awarness Ahead Of Independence Referendum

Community education campaign funded by UNDP

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Dec. 6, 2016) – The Autonomous Region of Bougainville is now at a critical time where preparations for referendum is underway and organisations and women and youth groups are coordinating activity plans in raising awareness, a woman leader says.

Bougainville Women’s Federation president Josephine Kauona told The National that in the region their focus areas were women because most times they missed out on development programmes and information.

“As an organisation, we are responsible for women and also young women and youths. We are also having a separate plan for activities – that is going out to the community to get information to the women so that they have the right information in preparation for the referendum. So, when the referendum comes, they are not missing out on the vital information and know what referendum is and what is required of them?”

“We are going out to all the districts in the region, visiting all the communities. The programme is funded by UNDP and we are thankful that at least we are given the opportunity to reach out to our women with the information they need.”

Kauona said the federation had projects that mentored young women into leadership roles and build their leadership capacity and skills.

She said they were conducting trainers’ programmes for youths who could go out to the communities and teach the people on voting system so all could exercise their rights to vote wisely.
