SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Dec. 27, 2016) – Government Member of Parliament Balmindar Singh, who has been charged with one count of assault on a man inside a Suva nightclub last Friday, was only released from custody on medical grounds.

Confirming this, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the FijiFirst parliamentarian was arrested on Friday night and taken into custody where he complained of being sick.

"Then he was taken for medical treatment afterwards and released to appear today (yesterday)," Ms Naisoro said.

She said Mr Singh was taken to hospital under police guard.

"He was taken with a police officer and then the medical advice that was given that he was not fit enough to be kept in custody. We had to follow that," Ms Naisoro said.

"He was released on medical advice. We just had to ensure that we followed the medical advice".

She said his assault charge still remained.

"So what will happen from today (yesterday) is that they will do a charge and summons for his next court appearance."

Mr Singh allegedly assaulted a 30-year-old man from Nadera inside a popular Suva nightclub.
