8.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits The Island Of Bougainville

No immediate reports of damages or casualties

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, January 23, 2017) – A large earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 shocked the island of Bougainville yesterday according to the United States Geometrical Survey.

The earthquake was felt 40 kilometres West of Panguna in Papua New Guinea with a depth of 153.8 kilometres at around 15:31pm Bougainville Standard Time (BST) and 14:31pm PNG Time and lasted for nearly 10 seconds.

Earthquakes have frequented the area as of November and December 2016, and again in January this year.

The latest yesterday (Sunday) had no immediate reports of damages or casualties, and Bougainville is one of the island’s located in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
