PORT VILA, Vanuatu (Vanuatu Daily Post, Feb. 16, 2017) – Four Tannese film stars of the film ‘Tanna’ including Mungau Dain and Marie Wawa are expected to leave the country at the weekend, to attend the Oscars Academy Awards in Hollywood, Los Angeles in America on February 24.

Final voting closes on February 21st.

Australia now has a real shot at picking up an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the awards.

The Australian movie has made it to the Oscars shortlist as one of five films still in the hunt for the best foreign language film at the 2017 Academy Awards.

The low-budget movie, shot in the Nauvhal language on Tanna with an amateur cast, most of whom had never seen a movie in the making, let alone acted in a movie before, was one of 85 films submitted for consideration in the category.

It has now made it to the final five nominees the best of which will be announced on January 24.

Acting Director General of the Ministry of Trade and Tourism, George Borugu says the Government has allocated almost Vt3 million towards the stars’ journey and accommodation and allowances to Hollywood to witness the awards ceremony.

So far the movie has already snatched ten international awards.

“While the stars are travelling under Australia as it is an Australian-made movie, the presence of the ni-Vanuatu stars in Hollywood, is in itself going to be a dramatic tourism promotion for Vanuatu because they are the ones who have made Australia and Vanuatu proud,” he says.

“Imagine zooming from zero to the final nominations and awards, there is nothing like this yet in the Pacific or perhaps even the world.

“The actors did not go through acting school to qualify for their roles but they went and showed the world what incredible, natural talents ni-Vanuatu are blessed with.”

Hollywood, informally called Tinseltown, is an ethnically diverse, densely populated neighborhood in the central region of Los Angeles, California.

Hollywood is known as the home of the United States film industry including several of its historical studios, and its name has come to be a shorthand reference for the industry and the people in it.

According to information obtained online, Hollywood was a small community in 1870, and was incorporated as a municipality in 1903.

It was consolidated with the city of Los Angeles in 1910, and soon thereafter a prominent film industry emerged, eventually becoming the most recognizable film industry in the world.

Film company names like Twentieth Century Fox and Universal Studios helped to promote the film industry to where it is today.
