Australia Minister Of Foreign Affairs Arrives For Annual Dialogue With Papua New Guinea

Bishop to officially open new Consulate-General in Lae

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, March 9, 2017) – Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop with her Ministerial counterparts and delegates will arrive in Lae today for the annual dialogue between the two countries.

Accompanying her will be the Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells for the 25th Ministerial Forum.

The visiting delegation will attend a business breakfast with Lae business leaders at the Lae Yacht Club, visit Angau Memorial Hospital and proceed with a mini tour of the National Agriculture Research Institute at Bubia.

Ms Bishop will also officially open the Australian Consulate-General in Lae, and look into some of the key initiatives of the Papua New Guinea-Australia partnership.

She will be joined by Papua New Guinea’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Rimbink Pato who will co-chair the Forum in Madang.

The sensitive Manus asylum seekers’ centre is expected to be a focal point of discussion together with APEC 2018 for which Australia is assisting PNG with a $100 million contribution.

Others with Ms Bishop include the Ministers for Immigration and Border Protection, Veterans Affairs, International Development and the Pacific, and the Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment.

Other issues including trade and investment, development, defence, border security and policing will be discussed during the Ministerial Forum.
