New Caledonia Enhances Ties With Vanuatu Capital City

President Germain visits Port Vila to discuss aid, economic exchanges

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (Vanuatu Daily Post, March 13, 2017) – Port Vila Municipality Council and the government of the neighbouring New Caledonia discussed bilateral aid and economic exchanges between Port Vila City and the French territory during a brief meeting recently.

Lord Mayor Ulrich Sumptoh told President Philippe Germain in Port Vila that New Caledonia have enjoyed strong diplomatic and friendly relations over the years resulting in Port Vila establishing sister city relations with Dumbea and Lifou.

In 2014 a member of the Police de Quartier or Neighbourhood Police arrived in Port Vila and mentored some members of the Port Vila Municipal Wardens.

Lord Mayor Sumptoh told the President of New Caledonia that now PVMC plans to decentralize into the community by establishing the offices of wardens into the five different wards of the Port Vila Municipal.

“In the long run we plan to post the French trained municipal wardens to the different wards in town,” Mr Sumptoh told the visiting dignitaries.

France Ambassador to Vanuatu, Mr Gilles Favret also accompanied NC President Germain’s 14-man delegation to the Town Hall.

President Germain said he was very impressed with a French speaking mayor in Vanuatu and that it was good to see a young leader assume the duty of Lord Mayor in a City, but Mayor Sumptoh said Port Vila Municipal has a tradition of producing French speaking mayors.

The current Market House in the heart of the Capital was funded by a grant from Agence Francaise de Developpement so President Germain visited the market house too when he was here.

A PVMC major development, the Vt120 million [US$1.1 million] Dumbea building to replace the current Dumbea Hall to be built by a grant from the AFD had been confirmed during the meeting.

In other municipal news, Port Vila Mayor Sumptoh will take part in the Vientiane International Mayors Forum to be held in conjunction with the 10th Regional Forum on Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia, Vientiane in Lao Peoples Democratic Republic from March 14 – 15.

The Mayor will be accompanied by the Town Planning Assistant Building Inspector, Mr Sandy Serge Mwetu.
