Former French Polynesia President Backs Marine Le Pen For President

Gaston Flosse throws support behind right wing candidate in France

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, May 2, 2017) – The leader of French Polynesia's Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party has called on Tahitians to rally behind Marine Le Pen in this weekend's French presidential election, saying she is the only one with a programme for the territory.

Gaston Flosse has described her rival Emmanuel Macron as the choice of the losers, he said Macron might be elected by default and not because of conviction as his policies were nothing but air.

Flosse said Ms Le Pen had formally engaged herself for the plans of his party which was to turn French Polynesia into an associated state of France.

In last month's first round of voting in French Polynesia, the most successful candidate was Francois Fillon whose result was his best of all electorates.

[PIR editor's note: On May 2, 2017 RNZI reported that 'The main pro-independence party in New Caledonia has restated its call to boycott this year's French elections, saying it will instead focus on preparing next year's planned referendum on full sovereignty. … The secretary general of the Caledonian Union Gerard Reignier said in this weekend's presidential election, he is certain the National Front's Marine Le Pen will come first in New Caledonia. … Mr Reignier said he expected New Caledonia to give her the best result of any electorate which he says was a bad sign for the region and for France.']
